Diagonal Diary: A two-wheeled record, a weightlifting wonder, and Divina’s birthday
Mon 12 August: “Proper racing,” was how Rob Huff described the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) weekend at Knockhill after winning the third and final race on Sunday. Colin Turkington and Jake Hill were the other two drivers to stand atop the podium in Scotland, as the latter’s victory in his 250th BTCC race saw him close the gap to Championship leader Tom Ingram to three points with three rounds remaining. The first of those is at Donington Park on 24-25 August. Three cheers for Owen Hudson of our content team whose video of Mikey Doble’s car taking a corner on two wheels achieved a record number of views on social media.
The Olympics came to a spectacular end on Sunday and there was more success for the EventR 11 on the final day. Our client EventR – the app designed by a team of software developers led by the former Formula 1 team principal Otmar Szafnauer to simplify team travel – wished ‘good luck’ to 11 inspirational Team GB athletes ahead of the Games. Among them was Emily Campbell, who won a weightlifting bronze medal in Paris on Sunday. That took the EventR 11’s medal tally to six after successes for Georgie Brayshaw, Tom Daley, Sky Brown, Harry Hepworth, and Toby Roberts. Congratulations to them all.
Tue 13 August: A day in our City of London offices begins with a meeting with our client Pat Heuzenroeder – the 18-year-old Australian racing driver competing in the GB3 Championship. The penultimate round of Pat’s debut season is now less than a month away and plans for the event at Donington Park (7-8 September) are in full swing.
A brand-new Motor Sport column by Diagonal MD Matt Bishop is published. This week, the Bish profiles Divina Galica who celebrates her 80th birthday today. The former Winter Olympian and Formula 1 driver can still be found on track as a driver coach, and she never misses an F1 grand prix.
Wed 14 August: A busy day of meetings with two young racing drivers whom we may work with, one in the UK and one in the USA. Our comms/PR, digital and social media, and sponsorship acquisition offerings are all discussed. More on this soon…
Thu 15 August: We are finalising plans for some new promotional filming with Otmar Szafnauer, founder of our client EventR. Otmar and his team have introduced a range of updates to the app over recent months and this will be a chance for him to outline how EventR can simplify team travel.
Fri 16 August: Call with Asetek SimSports – the manufacturer of sim-racing hardware based in Denmark – to brief their team, including founder and CEO, Andre Eriksen, ahead of their visit to Gamescom – Europe’s leading trade fair for the gaming industry – in Cologne, Germany, next week. We’ve been liaising with media regarding an exciting new product that Asetek will be showcasing at Gamescom, and a busy schedule of interviews awaits. Our team will be on the ground in Cologne, and we look forward to bringing you more on all of that next week. In the meantime, have a great weekend!
